A “mind-reading” tool now has been created by authorities in China to detect exactly who has been watching pornography, which is illegal in the repressive communist regime.

The South China Morning Post said an electrical engineering team has combined the power of humans and the power of artificial intelligence to create a prototype that sounds an alarm when an “indecent” image appears on a screen.

A report at Yahoo explained the device is able to reveal when a man is watching pornography by “reading his mind.”

Xu Jianjun, chief of the electrical engineering experiment center at Beijing Jiaotong University, published a report about the project in the Journal of Electronic Measurement and Instrumentation.

It is for, he said, “bad information detection.”

The report explained the technology was tested on 15 male university students who agreed to wear the device while sitting in front of a computer screen – and an alarm would go off when explicit imagery was detected by the brain.

The developers claim their device can adapt to the brainwaves of a human censor, and can filter out signals that could come from emotions or being weary.

“Chinese authorities employ professional censors called jian huang shi – porn appraisers – to check social media for what they deem inappropriate content,” the report explained.

The human element is needed because human brains can detect pornographic content far more quickly than AI, the report said.

The report did cite a possible issue with the ethics involved.

“There is no law to regulate the use of such devices or protect the data they collected,” said the observer who was from the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei.
