A large majority of Americans say it’s time for the social-media website TikTok to be taken out of app stores, so children and others cannot get hold of it.
Critics have charged that the program is literally a spyware for the Chinese Communist Party, and now a report at Epoch Times said some 60% of Americans believe the Chinese program should vanish.
That’s according to a survey by Convention of States Action and Trafalgar Group.
In that polling, 58.6% said they would support “efforts to remove TikTok from app stores now that the company has revealed Americans’ user data can be accessed by TikTok employees in China.”
The software allows people to post short videos online.
Only 17.8% of those answering the polls questions opposed that, and another 23.6% weren’t sure.
The poll done July 7-10 surveyed more than 1,000 likely 2022 election voters. Its margin of error is 2.9%.
Just weeks ago Buzzfeed News got recordings of internal TikTok meetings that “allegedly show that from at least September 2021 to January, engineers in China had access to the app’s U.S. data.”
At that time there developed a significant push to remove the program, with 76.8% of Republicans, 56.9% of independents and 39.2% of Democrats on board.
The fears have been that the app, owned by the China-based ByteDance, is being used by the CCP for espionage. After all, the laws in that nation compel companies to do the bidding of Chinese Intel agencies when ordered to.
Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo., told The Epoch Times that the program is “a very real threat to our national security.”
TikTok officials have denied those claims.
A story posted on WND several weeks ago pointed out that Brendan Carr, of the Federal Communications Commission, called for the removal of the program.
He said, at the time, “TikTok poses an unacceptable national security risk due to its extensive data harvesting being combined with Beijing’s apparently unchecked access to that sensitive data.”
He also cited the extensive data collection going on, and the company’s “dodgy” responses about that.
