PEMBROKE PINES, Florida — A disturbing incident in a South Florida classroom put a teacher in the hospital last week after she was allegedly beaten by a 5-year-old student, leaving her “dazed” and “unresponsive.”
According to police in Pembroke Pines, a city 15 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale, an altercation initially broke out March 2 between two students, ages 4 and 5, at Pines Lakes Elementary School. The youngsters were said to be throwing items around the classroom and flipping chairs.
The teacher brought the 5-year-old to a “cool down” room, an empty smaller classroom, and that’s where she was reportedly pummeled by the boy’s hands, fists and feet.
According to the police report, officers were summoned to the campus when the unidentified teacher reported she “needed support” on the school’s radio system.
The woman was found by first responders “sitting on the ground against the wall,” and police noted she “was clearly weak and dazed” and in a “faint state.”
The police report indicates she “began coughing and dry heaving,” prompting one officer to place the woman on her side “to maintain an open airflow and prevent possible choking.”
The responding officer tried getting a response from the teacher, but was unable to, with the report noting the teacher “continued to blink and breathe regularly but at no point was able to vocally respond or show signs of a response.”
“Rescue then got to the room and immediately got her on the stretcher,” the police report said. “Rescue advised they would be transporting her to Memorial Regional Hospital” in Hollywood, Florida.
Amanda Conwell, a public information officer for the Pembroke Pines Police Department told Newsweek that the teacher “has since returned home and is not under hospital care.”
“Due to the child being below the age of reason, no arrests have been made at this time and no charges were filed with the State Attorney’s Office,” Conwell told Newsweek. “The child and their family were referred to Child Protective Services for additional resources. Our investigation is still active, however, so this information may change.”
While school officials in Broward County are referring all questions about the smackdown to police, the district shared a message that Principal Susan Sasse sent to parents and staff, acknowledging “an incident that occurred in school” which required “a staff member to be transported to a local medical facility.”
“At all times during the incident, our campus was secured,” Sasse reported, according to NBC News. “As always, the health, safety and well being of our students and staff continues to be my highest priority.”
