Tim Ryan, say his name: Cayler Ellingson

“Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic,” President Joe Biden warned America last month.

Last week, Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, running for U.S. Senate in Ohio, offered his opinion on what should be done about those who allegedly threaten the republic. As to “the extremists we are dealing with every day,” said Ryan, “We’ve got to kill and confront that movement.”

North Dakota man Shannon Brandt, 41, appears to have taken Biden’s warning and Ryan’s marching orders to heart. In the early morning hours Sunday, Brandt intentionally ran over 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson in his SUV following a political argument at a street dance.

As reported in the Valley News, a North Dakota publication, “Brandt told State Radio that the pedestrian was part of a Republican extremist group and that he was afraid they were ‘coming to get him.'”

According to court documents, however, Ellingson called his mother, who was on her way to pick him up, telling her that “he” or “they” were chasing him.

Ellingson had reason to be concerned. Brandt pursued Ellingson in his SUV, ran him down in an alley, killed him, then fled the scene. Some time later, Brandt called 911 to report that he had hit a pedestrian.

“MAGA Republicans do not respect the Constitution,” Biden told America. “They do not believe in the rule of law.” Unlike MAGA Republicans, Shannon Brandt really did not believe in the rule of law.

Brandt has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide and DUI. He was released on $50,000 bond. By way of contrast, nearly 80 of the Jan. 6 defendants were denied bail altogether. None of them killed anyone or inflicted a serious injury.

Or consider the case of James Alex Fields, a 20-year-old emotionally troubled loner who pulled his marching orders from the internet. On Aug. 12, 2017, motivated like Brandt by political animus, Fields ran over a woman in the streets of Charlottesville.

Although both Fields and the woman he killed, Heather Heyer, were white, the feds swooped in and charged him with violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. He was ultimately sentenced to life in prison.

The Charlottesville case was, of course, a cause celebre. The media could not retell the story often enough and falsely enough. They paved the way for Joe Biden to launch his campaign for president in April 2019 with two words: “Charlottesville, Virginia.”

Biden continued, “[Trump] said there were ‘some very fine people on both sides.’ With those words, the president of the United States assigned a moral equivalence between those spreading hate and those with the courage to stand against it.”

Of course, Biden was lying. His lips were moving. Trump had said no such thing. “But you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides,” said Trump in an April 2017 press conference, adding, “and I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally.”

Shannon Brandt should be totally condemned as well, but before he can be condemned he at least has to be mentioned. The mainstream media have yet to do it – not a single mention beyond North Dakota and barely even there.

To date, no one on the left has condemned Brandt. Not a word. Nor have any of these champions of democracy mentioned Cayler Ellingson. Not Joe Biden. Not Rep. Ryan. Not the Department of Justice.

Cayler Ellingson made the fatal mistake of arguing with a progressive Democrat. As poet Carl Sandburg famously said: “If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell.”

Having built a philosophy – such as it is – on a foundation of lies, the woke cannot win an argument on any front. As Shannon Brandt showed, however, their table-pounding days may be behind them.
