Multiple longtime sports stars are calling out transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, who was born male, for creating unfair competition for women in college swimming.
Thomas has been competing for the University of Pennsylvania women’s swim team this year – after earlier years of competing on the men’s team, now setting records as he goes.
At Just the News, a report revealed Nancy Hogshead-Makar, an Olympic swimmer, said, “It was not air when I raced against doped-up East Germans, and it is not fair for women to compete against transgender swimmer Lia Thomas; here’s why.”
She explained Thomas’s testosterone suppression treatment was insufficient “to level the playing field” as he’s crushing female competitors now, even though he was on the men’s team for years and “never stood out,” the report said.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association allowed Thomas to compete on the women’s team.
But tennis stars Martina Navratilove and Chris Evert, and Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, agreed with Hogshead-Makar.
On social media, Navratilova said, of the criticism from Hogshead-Makar, “A well reasoned and fair take on trans women inclusion in women’s sports.”
Evert, online, said, “I second that.”
She added, “Science has proved from the onset of male puberty, mainly because of high testosterone levels, male bodies are faster, stronger, and have more endurance than female bodies.”
Davies, a gold medalist, also joined the conversation, putting on social media a link to Hogshead-Makar’s article.
Daley Thompson, a two-time Olympic decathlon champion, earlier had endorsed the concept of men competing against men, and earlier U.S. Swimming referee Cynthia Millen resigned protest of the decision to allow Thomas to swim against women.
The opinion largely held by Thomas critics also agrees with the general population, according to a report from the Washington Examiner.
There, Paul Bedard in his column explained that a new poll shows 75% of the respondents said there are only two genders, male and female.
“That is the surprising result of the latest Rasmussen Reports survey done at a time when transgender controversies are smashing into college sports, provoking protests in federal prisons, and feeding protests of those such as Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling who have argued that there are only two sexes,” he explained.
“Rasmussen asked voters about Rowling’s statements, and 75% agreed that there are only two sexes, with 63% ‘strongly’ agreeing,” he wrote.
“People also largely agreed that they do not want their schoolchildren counseled on their gender identity without their consent. By a margin of 68% to 19%, voters said they don’t want the counseling without their knowledge,” Bedard added.
He cited Rasmussen’s report directly, which said,” Majorities of all political categories — 80% of Republicans, 54% of Democrats and 72% of those unaffiliated with either major party — are opposed to schools counseling children on gender identity without informing parents.
“While majorities in every political category agree that there are only two genders, Democrats (47%) are less likely than Republicans (82%) or the unaffiliated (60%) to say they ‘strongly agree.'”
