A member of the legislature of Canada’s province of Ontario was expelled during a session Tuesday morning because she was not vaccinated for COVID-19.
Cambridge, Ontario, MPP Belinda Karahalios had recently recovered from COVID-19 and tested negative for the virus. But Speaker Ted Arnott ordered her to leave because the current advice from the public officer of health was that she must be out of the chamber for 90 days following her positive test, Canada’s CBC News reported.
“I need to address the member for Cambridge – member for Cambridge is obviously in the precinct and in the chamber at the present time in contravention of the current COVID-19 screening protocols that have been adopted by the Legislature – and I must now ask the member to withdraw from the chamber and leave the precinct,” Arnott said.
Karahalios refused, saying “the rules that you’ve set out is proof of double vaccination or proof of negative rapid antigen test, which I was able to provide this morning.”
“I’m not in contravention of the rules,” she said.
But the lawmaker was escorted out after Arnott asked her three times to leave.
On Twitter, Karahalios, a critic of vaccine mandates and pandemic lockdowns, called the Ontario government a “disgrace” and its actions “an affront to democracy.”
Alluding to her natural immunity – which more than 140 studies have shown to be superior to immunity afforded by vaccines – she said she was removed despite being “the MPP least likely to spread COVID-19.”
In June 2020, Toronto’s City News reported, Karahalios was expelled from the Progressive Conservative caucus by Ontario Premier Doug Ford for voting against a sweeping law that extended pandemic emergency orders.
