Companies pulling ads that were appearing in proximity to Twitter porn solicitations

Major corporations like Mazda, Forbes and PBS Kids have taken their add down from parts of Twitter because they were appearing adjacent to offensive social media statements soliciting child pornography, a new report explains.

Reuters confirms that Dyson also is taking the same actions. And DIRECTV and Thoughtworks also told Reuters late on Wednesday they have paused their advertising on Twitter.

The list already stretches to 30-some companies as well known as Walt Disney and Coca-Cola that were concerned their ads appeared on the profile pages of “of Twitter accounts peddling links to the exploitative material, according to a Reuters review of accounts identified in new research about child sex abuse online from cybersecurity group Ghost Data,” the report explained.

Those offending statements included key words related to “rape” and “teens” and one instance involved a promotion for shoe brand Cole Haan appearing next to a social media statement “which a user” said they were “trading teen/child.”

Reuters confirmed David Maddocks, brand president Cole Haan, was “horrified.”

“Either Twitter is going to fix this, or we’ll fix it by any means we can, which includes not buying Twitter ads.”

Reuters reported another situation had the content “Yung girls ONLY, NO Boys,” next to a promoted tweet for Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital in Texas.

One Twitter official said in the report the company had “no tolerance” for the problem.

The report said the problem first was revealed by The Verge a few weeks ago, but Reuters now was confirming “the emerging pushback from advertisers that are critical to Twitter’s revenue stream is reported here by Reuters for the first time.”

The platform is home to a “thriving exchange of pornographic imagery,” the report said, making up about one-seventh of all postings.

But the report said Ghost Data said more than 500 accounts openly had shared or sought child sexual abuse material, over a period of just 20 days.

When Reuters obtained details of hundreds of offending accounts, and shared them with Twitter, the social media company finally suspended them, the report said.

“Twitter needs to fix this problem ASAP, and until they do, we are going to cease any further paid activity on Twitter,” a Forbes official said in the report.

Mazda officials said they were banning ads on Twitter profile pages now, as “there is no place for this type of content online.”

At Human Events, a report said, “Ghost Data founder Andrew Stroppa revealed that his research found that Twitter ‘has a severe problem with child pornography,’ but that the public release of the report would be delayed because it is ‘a sensitive topic.’”

The report continued, “Eliza Bleu, a Human Events contributor and human trafficking survivor advocate has drawn public attention to Twitter’s repeated severe mishandling of child sexual abuse material posted on the platform. She says that if advertisers have any compassion for children or other vulnerable populations, they should pull their ads from Twitter immediately.”

In a recent case involving Twitter, Homeland Security had to step in to force the removal of images and videos of a teenage sex trafficking victim. Twitter had refused to remove the material, claiming that it did not “violate policies.”
