Democratic Party members appear to be suffering from “Mammy Yokum Syndrome” (MYS). For those who remember the American newspaper comic strip “Li’l Abner” – cartoonist Al Capp’s creation about a hillbilly family named Yokum – one of his characters was matriarch Mammy Yokum. She was the arbiter of all disagreements who ended any discussion of an issue with the words “I has spoken.”
Among the victims suffering from MYS today are President Joe Biden and Georgia’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams.
Biden has demonstrated symptoms on numerous occasions. Take, for example, the issue of whether America is in a recession.
A fairly straightforward definition of recession had long been accepted before Biden became president. In December 2000, President Bill Clinton defined it as “two quarters in a row of negative growth.” Not a peep was heard from then-Sen. Biden to dispute Clinton’s definition.
However, earlier this year, as we approached our second quarter of negative growth, Biden redefined recession, undoubtedly in an effort to prolong having to accept the obvious. He declared a second negative quarter did not really mean we were entering a recession, claiming that prolonged COVID-19 factors, along with the war in Ukraine, had so muddled economic projections that a variety of economic signals – not just Gross Domestic Product – had to be examined. Biden’s bottom line would have done Mammy Yokum proud as basically he told us there would be no recession unless he decided otherwise – end of argument.
The president’s “I has spoken” line was readily accepted by a Biden-can-do-no-wrong mainstream media (MSM), which would have gone after a Republican president for taking such a position. It was no sooner after this MYS moment had passed, however, that Biden provided us with another one.
During a “60 Minutes” interview, Biden proclaimed the COVID-19 pandemic to be over, despite over 2 million reported cases in August that included 13,606 deaths. Additionally, while both Dr. Anthony Fauci and CDC Director Rochelle Walensky disagreed with Biden’s claim, most of MSM seemed to accept it as the president embraced the fallacy that, if he said it was over, it was over.
White House officials did try to walk back Biden’s declaration as a confused public wondered who exactly is running the administration. There have been so many times Biden’s staff has had to huddle up to translate what the president “meant” to say, it is surprising they have yet to establish a new Cabinet post position for a Secretary of Translation.
More recently, candidate Abrams has also demonstrated MYS symptoms. Having failed to win her previous campaign against the current Republican governor, Abrams is pulling out all stops to trigger liberal support for her campaign. This includes promulgating misinformation to the public with an outrageous claim she made about abortion in an effort to appease pro-choice voters.
During a panel discussion on abortion, self-declared medical expert Abrams made the following insane comment to promote a “wild conspiracy theory” of her own creation: “There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks. It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman’s body.”
Apparently, Abrams’ “I has spoken” position on the issue was found acceptable by Planned Parenthood – which provides abortions across the nation – as indicated by a change to its website fact sheet. It sought to downplay the sound of a heartbeat being detectable in the first five to six weeks of fetal heart development as per Abrams’ opinion.
The Planned Parenthood change reads, “It sounds like a heartbeat on an ultrasound, but it’s not a fully-formed heart – it’s the earliest stage of the heart developing.” Reluctant to label it as a heartbeat, Planned Parenthood says there is “cardiac activity” at five to six weeks.
While medical experts do disagree on when the heartbeat begins in the embryo, Dr. Tara Sander Lee says, “A preborn baby’s heart is actively beating at 6 weeks and will have beat nearly 16 million times by 15 weeks. In fact, at 6 weeks’ gestation, the baby’s heart rate is about 98 beats per minute, which can be easily detected by ultrasound.” (Note to Abrams: Dr. Lee is a woman and she hears the heartbeat.)
Trying to deny a human heartbeat is what it is by giving it a label such as “cardiac activity” is similar to what Biden did to deny a recession is what it is. At least Planned Parenthood did not go as far to the left as to give credence to Abrams’ idiotic conspiracy claim that any ultrasound detection is simply manufactured as a ploy designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman’s body.
Symptoms of MYS affliction involve using wordsmithing to avoid accepting truth. Sadly, many Democratic Party leaders appear to be terminally ill.
