Vowing to make illegal drug abuse safer and more racially equitable, the Biden administration is using taxpayer funds to distribute glass pipes for drug addicts to smoke crack cocaine, crystal methamphetamine and “any illicit substance.”
The $30 million grant program, beginning in May, will provide funds to nonprofits and local governments for “smoking kits/supplies,” the Washington Free Beacon reported.
Overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services, the program aims to reduce the risk of infection from cuts and sores when smoking substances with glass pipes.
The grant applicants receive priority if they treat a majority of “underserved communities,” including African Americans and “LGBTQ+ persons.” The funding comes from President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which Senate Democrats passed party lines after Vice President Kamala Harris cast a tie-breaking vote.
The prioritization was established under Biden’s executive order on “advancing racial equity.”
The Free Beacon noted that President Biden’s son Hunter is a longtime user of crack cocaine.
While Democratic-run cities such as San Francisco and Seattle distribute smoking kits, lawmakers in Maryland abandoned a distribution plan in response to complaints from African-American leaders and local law enforcement.
Sgt. Clyde Boatwright, president of the Maryland Fraternal Order of Police, advises governments to engage in “a preventive campaign as opposed to an enabling campaign.”
“I think it will offer an opportunity to have safer communities with fewer people who are dependable on these substances,” he told the Free Beacon.
Melissa Chen, a senior fellow with the Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism, was perplexed when she learned about the grant.
“I thought one driver of systematic racism is the white supremacists in government who pushed crack cocaine on urban communities,” she wrote on Twitter.
“Yet Biden’s admin is spending public funds to increase ‘racial equity’ in drug use paraphernalia? We have come full circle.”
