President Donald Trump is charging that members of the European Union are “not complying” with a trade deal to which they agreed, so there’s a new tariff coming.
He said there will be a tariff increased to 25% for European Union cars and trucks being delivered to the United States.
He said, on social media, “I am pleased to announce that, based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States. The Tariff will be increased to 25%. It is fully understood and agreed that, if they produce Cars and Trucks in U.S.A. Plants, there will be NO TARIFF. Many Automobile and Truck Plants are currently under construction, with over 100 Billion Dollars being invested, A RECORD in the History of Car and Truck Manufacturing. These Plants, staffed with American Workers, will be opening soon — There has never been anything like what is happening in America today! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP”
A report at the Washington Examiner said the goal is to “pressure manufacturers to produce more automobiles in America.”
The tariff already had been at 15%, “enacted under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.”
The announcement came just a day after the president confirmed he was dropping all tariffs related to the import of Scottish whisky after a state visit from King Charles III.
The president largely has avoided using tariffs on U.S. trading partners after the Supreme Court’s ruling that some of the tariffs he imposed earlier weren’t allowed.
But he’s been in conflict with multiple European leaders over his Operation Epic Fury intended to remove the ability of the Islamic regime in Iran to threaten the world with nuclear annihilation.
One of his announced options is to make large-scale troop changes, removing them from Germany, where Chancellor Friedrich Merz has criticized his work. Trump also has suggested that action against Italy and Spain.
“Italy has not been of any help to us, and Spain has been horrible, absolutely horrible,” he told reporters in the Oval Office Thursday afternoon. “When we needed them, they were not there. We have to remember that.”
Those thousands of American soldiers stationed in those nations contribute significantly to the economies there.
