Reacting to a subpoena from the House Select Committee on the Capitol riot, former President Donald Trump published a letter Friday charging the panel ignored many facts, including his authorization of thousands of National Guard troops before Jan. 6.
“Why the failure to act or use this ready force?” Trump asked.
Referring to a Department of Defense timeline, he noted the Pentagon “was surprised to receive a wholesale refusal, in writing, from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Capitol Police, who do not report to me, but report to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.”
Trump did not address in the letter whether or not he would comply with the subpoena or challenge it in court.
However, New York Times correspondent Michael Schmidt said “the former president has been telling aides he favors [testifying], so long as he gets to do so live, according to a person familiar with his discussions.”
Further, New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman confirmed the subpoena actually has “animated” Trump and he’s been telling advisers “he would consider testifying if they would air it live.”
On Thursday, in what likely will be its final hearing, the Democratic Party-controlled House committee voted 9-0 to subpoena Trump’s testimony.
Vice chairman Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo. – whose role on the panel helped fuel her landslide defeat in the Republican primary – declared that the “vast weight of the evidence so far has shown us that the central cause of Jan. 6 was one man, Donald Trump, who many others followed.”
“None of this would have happened without him. He was personally and substantially involved in all of it,” she insisted.
It was Cheney who submitting the resolution to subpoena Trump, leading to an immediate unanimous vote in favor.

In his letter Friday, Trump mocked the committee.
“Despite very poor television ratings, the Unselect Committee has perpetuated a Show Trial the likes of which this Country has never seen before,” he wrote. “There is no Due Process, no Cross-Examination, no ‘real’ Republican members, and no legitimacy since you do not talk about Election Fraud or not calling up the troops. It is a Witch Hunt of the highest level, a continuation of what has been going on for year.”
A Politico report on Thursday provided evidence for Trump’s claim that Americans are paying little attention to the committee’s work.
“Criticism,” Politico said, “of the 139 House Republicans who voted to challenge Trump’s loss on Jan. 6, 2021, has been all but absent from the TV airwaves with 25 days to go before the midterms.”
The crew Thursday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” which has backed the Jan. 6 committee, acknowledged that the immediate concern of most Americans is that they are being crushed by inflation.
