U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin, the leftist Democrat from Maryland who played a key role in outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s failed attempts to impeach and remove President Trump – because he was a danger to “democracy,” now says a part of the Constitution needs to be destroyed.
It’s the Electoral College, that key in the Constitution to assuring that even “fly-over” states with lower populations are not completely ignored in elections, that he wants gone.
He calls that provision a threat to democracy.
A commentary at Legal Insurrection noted, “Remember when liberals claimed that Trump was a threat to our cherished norms? Good times. … Have you noticed that anything Democrats don’t like is a threat to our democracy?”
Without the provisions of the Electoral College political campaigns could simply ignore the 15 or 20 states with the lowest populations, as population centers like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles could outvote them all, simply by numbers.
The constitutional provisions allows that even states like Wyoming and the Dakotas can have an input into a national election.
But CNN had reported, “Rep. Jamie Raskin, a member of the House January 6 select committee, said reforming the Electoral College to ensure the presidential winner reflects the outcome of the popular vote would be the next step to safeguard democracy.”
Raskin claimed, “The Electoral College now – which has given us five popular-vote losers as president in our history, twice in this century alone – has become a danger, not just to democracy, but to the American people. It was a danger on January 6.

“There are so many curving byways and nooks and crannies in the Electoral College, that there are opportunities for a lot of strategic mischief. We should elect the president the way we elect governors, senators, mayors, representatives, everybody else. Whoever gets the most votes wins.”
Such a political agenda already has been present in the U.S. for a number of years, with states agreeing simply to work around the Constitution by, state by state, promising that they would give all their Electoral College votes to the nationwide popular vote winner. Such a plan has yet to be tested in the courts for its constitutionality. Further, true democracies, where every person gets one vote on all issues, seldom last as the majority always figures out how to vote itself benefits at a cost to the minority.
Legal Insurrection pointed out, however, that Raskin “is the same man who objected to the Electoral College count when Trump won. Is this insurrection? He also objected to Bush’s win in 2000.”

The report explained the hypocrisy of Raskin’s agenda was pointed out by Nick Arama of RedState, who said, “Members of Congress swear to uphold the Constitution. As part of the Jan. 6 Committee, Democratic members of Congress called the riot an ‘attack on democracy’ and sought to smear any Republicans who dared to raise questions about the 2020 election as also ‘attacking democracy.’ Now, of course, trying to smear Republicans who raised questions or objected to electors was ridiculous, given that is provided for within the Constitution. But it was beyond hypocritical given committee members like Raskin had themselves objected to accepting electors in the past.”
