The U.S. military is searching for two service members who mysteriously went missing in Morocco on Sunday during a war games exercise.
United States Africa Command, or AFRICOM, announced: “Two U.S. service members participating in African Lion 2026 were reported missing near the Cap Draa Training Area, near the city of Tan Tan, Morocco, May 2, 2026.”

It also noted: “U.S., Moroccan and other assets from African Lion immediately initiated coordinated search and rescue operations, including ground, air, and maritime assets.
“The incident remains under investigation and the search is ongoing. Our focus is on the service members involved and their families. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.”
No details were released concerning which branch of the military the missing personnel are members of.
One Swiss journalist reported: “Unconfirmed reports suggest the two may have been off duty near a coastal cliff and could have been swept into the ocean, although this has not been officially verified.”

According to AFRICOM’s website, “African Lion is U.S. Africa Command’s largest, premier, annual exercise, hosted across Morocco, Ghana, Senegal and Tunisia.
“This joint, all-domain, multi-component, and multinational exercise includes more than 10,000 participants from more than twenty nations, including contingents from NATO. African Lion aims to strengthen interoperability among participants and build readiness to respond to crises and contingencies in Africa and around the world.”
